Coding with Adam: Build a Bixby Capsule in under an hour.

Let’s get started

Hi, I’m Adam Cheyer, I’m co-founder and VP of Engineering of Viv Labs and VP of R&D at Samsung, Bixby.

A lot of people have come up to me and said, “We want to learn about Bixby. We can download sample capsules, look at videos and search the resources…”, but I’d like to see you build a capsule from scratch, step-by-step.

With this video, that’s what we’re going to do.

To get started, first go to, your resource for all things Bixby. This will be your go-to place to read documentation, watch tutorial videos, and download Bixby Developer Studio.

After you’ve downloaded, installed, and launched Bixby Studio, you have two options: Create a New Capsule or Open an Existing Capsule. As the title states, we’ll be creating a brand-new capsule from scratch.

Once you’re up and running, you’ll need a data source or a computational source. For this tutorial, we will be using, the world’s largest cartoon search engine. We’re going to build a Bixby capsule that conversationally interacts with Perfect Cartoon. If you have an API, it’s pretty straightforward to make a Bixby Capsule out of any data source or transactional source. Luckily, Perfect Cartoon has just that!

What you will find in this video

As I get further into the video, you’ll learn to work with Models, which are made up of Concepts and Actions, and I’ll teach you how to define various keys of the Bixby SDK. Then I’ll do a deep dive into natural language training for Bixby and show you how to add variety to your capsules, so it really starts to get conversational with more natural interactions, the heart of Bixby.

Finally, I’ll cover Bixby Views, which uses layouts and components (like image lists), which defines a user interface that aligns with your own branding. I’ll also talk briefly about hints, so that you can help users find your capsule easier in the Marketplace. And hopefully, by the end of the tutorial, you’ll understand enough about developing with Bixby to get your capsule up and running and ready to publish to the upcoming Bixby Marketplace!

Now, let’s get to the tutorial.
